What is device encryption?

Device encryption converts the data to an encoded format that can only be decoded with an encryption key (such as a password). Before saving the data to disk, the device encrypts the data so that it cannot be read by people without the key. Many operating systems offer data encryption, but it usually needs to be enabled.
